Alternative Medicine For Depression - Some Tips and Hints


Depression is an ailment caused by chemical imbalance in the brain. Like other diseases, depression should be taken seriously that can lead to serious consequences, such as sleep deprivation, sadness, headaches and nervous breakdown. Depression is a widespread disorder and recent surveys have shown that nearly 10% of the total human population suffers from one or the other forms of depression. The results of U.S. National Comorbidity Survey showed that 17.3% of the general population went through a series of major depression and about 24.5% experienced an anxiety related illness at some point in their lives.

The rate of depression in women is twice as strong as it is in men. The treatment techniques of depression involve methods, such as antidepressants medication and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The effectiveness of these medical treatments is still a debatable topic and so alternative treatment techniques are available out of which some are discussed below:

Meditation: Meditation can be very helpful for curing depression, irrespective of the psychological or biological depression. Metta Bhavana or loving kindness meditation is a kind of meditation technique which has been found to be beneficial for depression patients. It is practiced by Buddhist people and focuses on enlightening love. Mindful meditation is another meditation technique for depression and works towards achieving a relaxed state of mind, free from worries.

Herbal Medication: Herbal medication includes rich diet of magnesium, vitamin B6, folic acid and omega-3 fatty acids. All these components are capable of introducing serotonin, which is a mood enhancing neurotransmitter. A doctor must be consulted as a precautionary measurement before jumping on to herbal treatments.

Reflexology: It was invented by Chinese people and a lot of times which is misinterpreted as acupuncture. According to reflexology the chemical composition distortions of the body can be effectively treated by stimulating the reflex points which are located in the foot. Each reflex point serves a special purpose, so choosing the desired reflex points that alleviate depression is the most important step in the treatment process.

Tissue Salt: Tissue salt can be very helpful as a short term treatment. It is available in the form of tablets and made from kali phos, nat mur, nat sulph and calc phos. All these ingredients are responsible for discarding the bad feelings like hopelessness and sadness.

Homeopathy: Homeopathic treatments involving ignatia, pulsatilla, sepia and aurum have been found very effective in curbing depression.
